Our Heritage 2040: Embracing the Past, Securing the Future
About Our Heritage 2040
As most of you will know, the Our Heritage 2040 project was launched in January 2020 by Jericho in partnership with Sizewell C in order to establish meaningful dialogue between a diverse group of stakeholders including business leaders, politicians, major energy players and local residents and communities.
Over time, this initiative has grown into something far more ambitious. While major infrastructure projects often bring with them inevitable complexities, Our Heritage 2040 has sought to go beyond the typical discourse. It now serves as a platform to explore how innovation, investment, and employment opportunities created by the energy sector can coexist with the preservation and future enhancement of Suffolk’s treasured Heritage Coast.
Embracing the Past, Securing the Future
This latest publication takes a deeper dive, combining stories and insights from the region’s past, the present, and looks towards its future. Through a rich collection of articles and interviews, it addresses a wide range of themes, from environmental issues to community resilience and regional development.
Looking back, Leiston’s industrial past underscores its role in the origins of global carbon emissions, while Peter Boggis’s fight against coastal erosion symbolises ongoing efforts to protect Suffolk’s coastline. Today, experts like Julia Pyke and Sir John Armitt offer insights into UK infrastructure challenges, while fisherman Noel Cattermole highlights the immediate impacts of climate change on local industries. Looking ahead to 2040, young voices from Lowestoft envision sustainable solutions, and proposals for Leiston’s Urban Plan from Russ Rainger and the development of Sizewell C underscore efforts to create a greener, more sustainable region that balances economic growth with environmental and cultural responsibility.
Through partnerships and shared ambition, Our Heritage 2040 continues to bridge the gap between progress and preservation, ensuring that the Suffolk Coast thrives for years to come.
