Jericho Notices - October 2020 - Making Build Back Better Meaningful & Practical
Building on some of the big ideas that emerged from the Jericho Conversations in the spring/ summer, we are continuing to seek and co-design practical ways to Build Back Better. This edition of Jericho Notices is dedicated to what’s been happening and what’s coming up as we move into autumn.
Click on any or many of the links below and immerse yourself in a series of cracking articles, rich insights and ideas. And enjoy!
Big Tech: The Ethics of Disruption
As part of the Ethics of Disruption programme, curated on behalf of Stifel, Matthew Gwyther reports on a number of events, hosted in September – from robotics to regulation. Do more Robots mean fewer jobs? What future role for Regulation? And do we have ethical frameworks sufficient to deal with inevitable disruption?
"There is an opportunity to create fantastic well-paid job in robotics and AI but the question is who gets those new jobs?"
Henry Parkes, Economist, Centre for Economic Justice, IPPR
You can catch-up with the insights and advice from the Can Robots Re-Boot the World? (or at least Britain) and Regulating Tech, Big & Small roundtables. The latter, long read, surfaces many of the issues currently swirling, not least in the minds of members of the US Congress.
Public Health: Where's the Patient?
Following the success of the first discussion into Public Health: In the Right Place?, in partnership with Assura, significant appetite exists to co-design tangible recommendations, with impacts and influence on health and social policy.
"I think there is a real opportunity for the new NHS built estate – whether acute hospital builds or GP practices etc. – to serve the community and their health and wellbeing and not be factories to process the sick."
Dame Laura Lee, CEO, Maggie’s
Across the autumn, we will be digging deeper with a series of working groups on Localism (making community-driven healthcare real); Design (from new funding models and partnerships to patient-centric design); Forgotten Communities; and Transition (“new” systems thinking and how to get there – a plan) … culminating in a summary report to be published towards the end of the year.If you are interested in participating in any of these conversations, please get in touch.
Asset Management: Investing in Society
Capitalism, as many have argued, is in urgent need of a reset and – as we emerge from the pandemic – never has this been more poignant. Current models of stewardship, accountability and purpose are ripe for disruption. At the end of September, in partnership with Federated Hermes, Jericho convened a roundtable exploring the crucial role that the Asset Management sector can play. This is a critical component in a wider Investing in Society programme.
"Our role is to properly steward other people’s wealth – not use that wealth as a vehicle for self-aggrandisement."
Saker Nusseibeh CBE, CEO, International,Federated Hermes
You can read the full summary report of the discussion here.Stay tuned for further details and next steps.
Young People: Our Future Voice Now
Throughout the Jericho Conversations, there was an important call to give voice to young people. There are, of course, many uncertainties that hang over the young at the moment: their education, prospects for work, freedom to move around and associate with peers and others. And, critical for many, the future of the planet.September saw the launch of the Our Future Voice Now initiative, supported and convened on behalf of Barclays LifeSkills. Bringing together a mix of expert contributors and youth representatives, the programme will gather key learnings and insights on the issues facing young people today through an inter-generational lens and develop recommendations for better policy-making.During the initial phase, we will be investigating Jobs & Skills; Mental Health & Wellbeing. Again, please get in touch if you would like to contribute and/or find out more.
Responsible Tax
Never has “tax” been sexier! As we emerge (or not) from the COVID crisis, who pays & how remains the subject of hot debate, in the UK and globally.Over the summer, KPMG’s Chris Morgan led a series of worldwide expert discussion groups looking at four stages of the pandemic through a Responsible Tax lens – Reaction, Resilience, Recovery, New Reality. You can find summary articles from each of these discussions and more on the Responsible Tax website.Key concerns emerging from the summer series – including the green agenda, Responsible Business and the digital economy – will form the basis of dedicated insight drives this autumn and beyond.
Environment and Energy: Our Heritage 2040
Last, but certainly not least, September saw the launch of the Our Heritage 2040 publication. The project, which began in early 2020, aims to develop ideas from local residents and employers in the Suffolk Coastal area to look optimistically towards what comes next for the region, striking a balance between the glories of the heritage coast and its outstanding natural beauty and the opportunities to develop new energy systems and work together towards a Net Zero Carbon Future. Hence the sub-title: “a new energy for the Suffolk coast”The magazine has been supported by Sizewell C, while maintaining complete editorial independence (as a number of the essays will testify). In October we will bring the essays to life with a series of (virtual) roundtable conversations - please get in touch if you would like to participate.
