For business leaders, the world is complex, unpredictable and fast changing. Traditional ways of running a company no longer work, and trust has been eroded. Alaric believes there are better ways of leading and organising, and has 35 years of helping clients change direction, respond and move faster, and improve performance. The result is more productive leadership teams, better businesses, contributing more to the world, and being more ready for the way ahead.
The management consulting industry earns most of its money helping clients save money and cut jobs. Alaric has seen decades of process re-design and rationalisation improve financial results. But to continue simply putting pressure on employees risks undermining their ability to sustain meaningful performance. There are limits to this model – the new frontier of performance is human, and Alaric has spent his career preferring to help leaders change their organisations for the better, and bring people with them to achieve new goals.
Alaric is one of Europe’s most experienced change specialists. He co-founded niche consultancy Stonecourt the week Northern Rock went bust in 2007 and enjoyed building a positively-focused business through the recession. He previously held senior consulting and client leadership roles at Oliver Wyman, PwC, Young & Rubicam, the BBC and Wolff Olins.
Clients have included Accenture, AOL, Aviva, BBC, British Airways, BT, Citibank, Dept of Business Innovation & Skills, Edelman, Heineken, HSBC, Johnson & Johnson, Lloyds Banking Group, McDonalds, Mars, MetLife, Metropolitan Police, Mubadala, Prudential, SAP, Sodexo and Unilever – helping them through changing marketplaces, regulatory pressure, new direction, new structures, M&A, and new ways of operating, often in the goldfish bowl of public scrutiny. Much of this work has been international: in Europe, US and Middle East.
Examples include: the top team at a bank re-thinking how to build trust with customers; a consumer goods multinational redefining its sense of identity from being a trading company to a business with a positive purpose in the world; a police force re-thinking how to engage its officers after some very public problems; and the CEO of a national airline bringing employees through customer service transformation, privatisation and rebranding through the 1980s.
Alaric has had two client-side roles, both of which made him a much better consultant – especially around what it takes to actually get changes to happen. He was global Director of Communication at PwC Consulting, brought in to help separate it from the audit firm – as a member of the marketing, HR and deal leadership teams. It was a two year rollercoaster of change against regulatory and public scrutiny and worsening markets – through an attempted IPO, several failed sales, four brands and four CEOs – eventually selling to IBM.
For four years Alaric was the first head of change communication at the BBC, recruited to advise a new director-general through significant and sometimes controversial change. He led a team responsible for communication, employee research and external outreach. He managed the BBC strategy process to redefine and articulate its public service broadcast purpose: the first time the BBC shared what programmes it should produce and why.
Alaric has also been a partner and practice leader at Oliver Wyman/Delta. He managed the research study Designed for Growth, well received by the FT. He founded and led the global change communication practice in Young & Rubicam (at Burson-Marsteller), and held a similar role at brand consultants Wolff Olins.
Alaric has a BSc (Economics) from University College, London, and an MSc (Economics) from the London School of Economics. He has spoken and published on leadership, communication, engagement, culture and managing change.
